2011 Ford Edge / Edge Sport Review and Photo

2011 Ford Edge / Edge Sport

Ford Edge is updated for 2011 with more power for its 3.5-liter V-6, better fuel economy, chassis upgrades, and bolder styling in and out, including the market debut of MyFord Touch, the company’s new infotainment interface. Perhaps even better, Ford brought the Edge Sport into its own with stiffer rear springs and unique shocks, gorgeous 22-inch wheels, and a 3.7-liter V-6 pumping out in excess of 300 hp. A turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder also will join the ranks as the fuel-economy champ sometime after making its debut in the new 2011 Explorer.

2010 Volkswagen Scirocco

2010 Volkswagen Scirocco

THE Scirocco is one of those cars which, providing you have any soul, you fall for at first sight.

It's slinky and it's sexy, all curves and crouched low to the ground, and the blazing Salsa Red body colour of the test car was the final sure touch to its sports coupe allure. So many vehicles lose much between the imagination of the design screen and the practicality requirements of the production line, but the distinctive Scirocco seems to have made it with many concepts still intact.

It's lower and longer than its much-desired kinsman, the Golf GTi, but is almost 10cm lower. An almost hooded-eyes look to the slashed lights dominates the front, which also features deep airdams and fine grille elements, while the high-sided flanks and frameless doors are the background for a pinch line arcing from just behind the front wheel arches to the rear lights to reflect the curve of the roof to the rear spoiler. Strong haunches and the big 17in alloys complete the powerful stance.

The fear may be that, with just a 1.4-litre engine under the bonnet, that visual promise will not be fulfilled, but fear not because this is a TSi unit.. Thus there is a belt-driven supercharger operating at lower engine speeds and a turbocharger coming in afterwards, so that there is very satisfying thrust from low down at around 1,000 revs to right up the scale. The standstill-to-62mph sprint is achieved in just eight seconds and the car is capable of 135mph. Some 1.4!

The six-speed manual box is quite long-geared but crisp, so you don't mind working it if you are looking for punch, and the benefit of that gearing, and the smallish engine, is that you enjoy good economy with the stirring performance - the official average return is more than 42mpg (I got 38mpg on a long, fairly aggressive motorway/rural roads run) with an extra-urban figure of 52.3mpg. The engine also puts out 154g/km of carbon dioxide, quite healthy.

The long mixed run provided the opportunity to explore Volkswagen's adaptive chassis control system, which offers you the choice of Comfort, Normal and Sport settings of suspension, steering and accelerator responses. As a result, the motorway cruise, employing the first two modes, was easy, calm and relaxed, particularly as the suppression of noise in the cabin is excellent. Generally it is limited to a little rumble off those big tyres, although you can enjoy a snort from the twin tailpipes if you give the car some gun.

The basis of the suspension system is taken from the Golf but with springs, dampers and anti-roll especially tuned, and turning off on to the country and hills section of the drive was the time to check out the Sport switch. The Scirocco is quite wide-tracked and has a very low centre of gravity, and the confidence with which it handled some pacey but weaving roads was most impressive, with grip and agility aplenty. An electronic stability programme is standard.

You are sat quite low and near to the Tarmac, of course, which is always good for the senses, and there is fine grip and support from the sports seats which still feel comfortable. There is height adjustment to go with the reach and rake choices for the sporty, flat-bottomed steering wheel.

Information is very well laid out in the cleanest of presentations, although I would have liked the info touch screen, here also featuring the optional satnav, to have been set a little higher.

Then there is the problem of the all-round visibility, a recurring one in cars of this type. The low nature of the car and the high waistline produce a letterbox-type view at the sides, and particularly the rear corners, the rear-view mirror outlook is restricted, too, and front angles are slightly hindered by the A pillars.

Otherwise, the quality of materials is Volkswagen high and the decor, with a scattering of chrome and brushed aluminium highlights, is attractive. Driver and front passenger are well off for room, but things are tighter for the pair at the back, both in head and leg space. Access to the rear is not too bad because of the memory/sliding front seats, although the low roofline means some agility is demanded.

Equipment levels in the Scirocco are quite good, including semi-automatic air conditioning, front, side and curtain airbags, electric front windows, automatic driving lights, rain sensor, leather grips, a cooled and lockable glovebox and a front armrest with storage and cup holders and an eight-speaker sound system for the touch-screen operated radio/ player which is MP3 compatible with multi-device interface.

There is also a split/folding rear seat, so extra luggage capacity is available over the standard boot, which has fair capacity but which, because of the high lip, is of the drop-in variety.

Since its launch - or, perhaps, relaunch because VW had a similarly-named car 30 years ago - the new Scirocco has picked up a stack of international awards and that is totally understandable. It's a little cracker in its handling, firepower, economics and green credentials and personality, the best thing VW has done for ages, and it costs under £20,000 for this 1.4 TSi version (there are also a 2.0 TSi and two turbo diesels, as well as a GT). Not totally practical for day-to-day life, agreed, but great fun.

Since 2009, Volkswagen has been making its version of the compact SUV, the Volkswagen Tiguan. The vehicle comes with many exciting features, somewhat in between the standard SUV and a luxury version of one. Priced in the range of $24,585 to $34, 775, it is an appealing vehicle for any new car buyer to consider. For an affordable compact SUV, the Volkswagen Tiguan has always done well for itself despite its higher price point. For 2011, the Tiguan returns with some modifications to the front fascia as well as changes to the engine in order to comply with the new Euro V emissions laws. Expect to see the Tiguan in dealerships starting in late 2010.

Press Release:

Shelby American, a wholly owned subsidiary of Carroll Shelby International Inc. (CSBI:PK), will offer a Super Snake post title package for the 2011 Ford Shelby GT500 with new styling cues and an optional 800 horsepower tuned engine. Only 1,000 total Super Snake packages for the 2011 model year car will be built at the Shelby American facility in Las Vegas or one of the official Shelby Mod Shops, beginning in September of this year.

“Ford Motor Company did a marvelous job making the 2011 model year GT500 lighter and more powerful,” said John Luft, president of Shelby American. “Our team applied its experience building Super Snakes over the past several years to offer a package that dramatically increases the new car’s capabilities. And with the visual changes we’ve made, it will be a definite stand out on the road or track.”

Just like the 2011 Shelby GT350, born on the proving grounds of the drag strip and road course at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Shelby American worked with companies like Ford Racing to create an even more aggressive suspension and engine package for the 2011 Super Snake.

“We extensively tested our mods for the 2011 model car before we decided the package was ready for the public,” added Gary Davis, vice president of production and R&D at Shelby American. “For those who want more performance than the stock GT500 offers, the Super Snake will definitely meet their expectations.”

For the 2011 model year, more power, a new anthracite wheel, white stripes and new side scoops are optional.

“We’ve only offered black stripes and chrome wheels on the Super Snake since we introduced the package a couple of years ago,” added Davis. “With the serious advancements made to the 2011 model year, it was time to differentiate it from the previous generation car. So we added an 800 horsepower tune, optional wheel, side scoop and stripes to make it easy to spot the new Shelby Super Snake.”

The 2011 Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake post title package includes:

• Ford Racing handling pack including dynamic adjustable dampers, lowering springs, tuned stabilizer bars, and front strut tower brace
• 6-speed manual transmission with 3.73:1 rear axle ratio
• Shelby/Ford Racing supercharger upgrade producing over 660 HP and 590 ft.-lbs. of torque
• Either a Shelby/Ford Racing or Shelby/Kenne Bell supercharger kit producing 750 HP with upgraded drive shaft, billet twin 75mm throttle body and exclusive badges
• Optional Shelby/Kenne Bell 800 horsepower tune on pump gas
• Borla exhaust system
• An optional Shelby / Eibach handling pack is also available
• Shelby-designed Alcoa 20-inch wheels in durabright or anthracite
• Short-throw shifter
• Forged Shelby / Baer brakes with 6 piston calipers and cross drilled / vented rotors
• Front brake cooling ducts and behind the door side scoops
• Unique fiberglass hood featuring classic Shelby design and pins
• Shelby signature Super Snake stripes in either matte black or matte white
• “Shelby” lettering across the rear deck lid
• “Super Snake” vehicle badges and official Shelby CSM interior plate
• Optional two tone leather interior
• Shelby signature embroidered headrests, floor mats and other Shelby designed components

The price of the 750 HP package is $30,245 including installation but not the car. Each vehicle will be listed in the official Shelby registry. Complete Super Snake packages will only be available through Shelby American and its mod shops. Customers interested in a Shelby GT500 Super Snake should call (702) 942-7325 or log onto www.shelbyamerican.com.

2012 Ford Mustang Boss 302 - First Look

It wasn’t so long ago that Ford unveiled the Boss 302R at the 2010 Detroit Auto Show. It was a fully caged and bare bones race car made a lot of enthusiasts hopeful for a street going variation as the race-car was limited to a production run of only 50. It’s been confirmed today in Monterey, California, 41 years later after the initial introduction of the first Boss in 1969, that there will indeed be a new Ford Mustang Boss 302 for 2012.

The original Boss 302 came into existence for homologation rules in SCCA’s Trans-Am racing series back in 1969. It won with Parnelli Jones behind the wheel in 1970. But today Ford’s not trying to beat the Camaro at the track in formal competition; instead they’ve targeted the Germans, specifically the 2010 BMW M3. A car that until recently would have easily been considered in a different class, and stiff competition to even an SVT Shelby prepped car. But Ford has benchmarked it and claim to lap Mazda Raceway, Laguna Seca, quicker.

In honor of this and the fact that Parnelli Jones won the 1970 T/A race at Laguna Seca, there will be a Boss 302 Laguna Seca Model offered in limited quantity. As one might expect the 2012 Boss 302 will use many of the parts developed for the track dedicated 302R, but remain 100-percent street legal.

Mustang Chief Engineer, Dave Pericak says, “The team at Ford wanted to offer their fellow Mustang enthusiasts something really special – a beautifully balanced factory-built race car that they could drive on the street…this is a front-to-back re-engineered Mustang with every system designed to make a good driver great and a great driver even better.”

A revised intake and cam grind bumps the already potent 5-liter V-8 making stock 412-bhp to 440 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque. The intake contains internal velocity stacks that should make wonderful noise when revving high on the new cams. But thanks to the engines stock twin variable valve timing the idle should remain smooth, and the powerband broad.

Rounding out the drivetrain improvements are a tougher clutch, short-throw shifter, 3.73 final drive and stock limited slip differential with carbon fiber plates. But for those who want just a bit more race in their Boss a torque-sensing differential and Recaro seat package is available. Every Boss comes with adjustable dampers that require a small screwdriver to adjust, just like back in 1969. The suspension has been stiffened and the rear anti-roll bar enlarged. The supervisor of the Mustang vehicle dynamics team, Brent Clark, has this to say, “We’ve given drivers five settings for their shocks. One is the softest, two is the factory setting and five is the firmest, and we’ve provided a wide range of adjustment. A customer can drive to the track on setting two, crank it up to five for improved response on the track, then dial down to one for a more relaxed ride home. What’s unique is that drivers will find – thanks to the way the suspension works as a complete system – the softest setting isn’t too loose and the firmest setting isn’t too controlled; each step just provides additional levels of control.”

A very unique feature is the quad exhaust. The two outlets at the rear are standard on the Mustang GT, but two extra outlets have been added on the side of the car, just ahead of the rear wheels. They don’t flow much so as to remain legal, but can be easily opened up for increased performance, and are even designed to accept electronically controlled dump valves. This was done for those who want to modify the car for push-button sound amplification.

Highlighting the new Mustangs electric power assist steering system in the Boss is the option to configure the effort between three modes; Comfort, normal and sport. We’d like to see this feature on the Mustang GT as well, which currently only has two modes that are selected depending on the stability control settings. The Boss maintains the ABS, and stability control system of the GT, but is recalibrated for the Boss’s higher limits.

Much of the raised limits come from 19-inch black alloy racing wheels shod with Pirelli PZero rubber. And Ford promises 1.0g of skidpad lateral acceleration performance. It’ll need to meet that if it wants to rival the BMW M3.

Braking performance is also improved with better brake lines, performance pads and performance tuned ABS, but the rotors and calipers are the same as those offered on the Mustang GT. We had no complaint on those when last we tested it, so these should feel even better.

“The look of the Boss is recognizable to anyone familiar with Trans-Am racing,” Chief Designer Darrell Behmer says. “We’ve taken design cues from the 1969 Boss street car and the menacing Bud Moore/Parnelli Jones race cars and carefully updated them to give the 2012 the proper bad-boy attitude that is unmistakably a Boss Mustang.”

It’s a big name to live up to, but this Mustang looks to have the goods. We just wish it hadn’t taken so long to get it back.

2012 Ford Edge Preview

2012 Ford Edge2012 Ford Edge Picture Preview

Ford Edge debuted as a awesome and groovy answer to SUV “soccer mom” stereotypes. Carrying cutting edge technology and designed using the modern urbanite in mind, the 2012 Edge promises drivers a chic driving encounter.

Due for release in September 2011, the 2012 Ford Edge is largely a carryover through the 2011 mid-cycle refresh. Physique fashion and alternatives will remain the same or comparable towards the preceding year. The 2012 Edge has however to debut inside the flesh at any automotive display, although speculators recommend it will be unveiled in the 2012 Detroit Auto Reveal. The first Ford Edge hopped into the spotlight being a 2007 product in the 2006 Detroit North American International Car Demonstrate. It absolutely was - and it is - a midsize crossover sport utility automobile seating five passengers, crafted for your enjoyable on-pavement knowledge. The Edge focuses on high-tech comfort and ease and contemporary fashion whilst seating efficiency and power about the bench. The majority of that ease and comfort and style, still, is listed about the solutions roster, and including those sweet alternatives promptly turns the price sour.

2012 Ford Edge New Features

New for 2012 is the Ford’s turbocharged EcoBoost motor, portended to turn into a mainstay because of the EPA’s increasingly stringent emission rules. The Edge EcoBoost variant can be a 2.0-liter four-cylinder powerplant, which compensates for its dimensions having a turbocharger and direct-fuel injection. Precise numbers are unavailable but expected horsepower and torque are approximately 237 and 250, respectively. Other changes, interior or exterior, will probably be minimal.

2012 Ford Edge Security

Security capabilities for your forthcoming Ford Edge will likely be similar for the 2011 equipment. The airbag system includes dual-stage front airbags, front seat-mounted side-impact airbags and aspect curtain airbags. Lively security capabilities are managed under AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Manage. Passive security components incorporate SOS Post-Crash Alert System, blind spot mirrors, 4-wheel ABS brakes and MyKey, which limits maximum pace and audio volume. Optional basic safety functions contain a rearview camera, adaptive cruise manage and Blind Spot Details Program. The 2011 model hasn't however been crash-tested through the NHTSA or IIHS.

2012 Ford Edge The Competition for the 2012 Ford Edge

The Edge faces fierce competition. Ford’s own Flex and Explorer SUVs are other options, although the Nissan Murano and Mazda CX-9 are even more athletic alternatives. Various challengers, such as the Toyota Highlander Hybrid, provide greater fuel economic climate and energy. The 2012 Ford Edge is really a stable SUV inside a brimming sea of sound SUVs. The choice is challenging, and also the Edge’s high-dollar sticker tends to make things no simpler.

2012 Mazda Demio EV

Mazda has announced that it’s developing an electric vehicle based on the Demio subcompact – known as the Mazda2 in Europe and North America –, which will be available for lease in Japan starting from spring 2012.

2011 Mazda Demio driving range is expected to be around 200 km (124 miles) and that it will be leased mainly to local government bodies and fleet customers. Mazda’s foray into the EV segment focuses on developing electric cars suitable for customers with short city commutes. Through the aforementioned lease program, the Japanese maker hopes to gain valuable information about usage requirements and electric drive technologies.

Certain systems sourced from EVs such as regenerative braking tech, will make their way into conventional models, which will also benefit from the firm’s SKYACTIV technologies, announced at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show.

The company’s core values are going to be centered around the internal combustion engine, but in the long run, customers can expect to find an increasing number of eco-friendly technologies fitted to Mazda models.

Mazda MX-5 2012 draws on Ibuki

A back-to-basics Mazda MX-5 is being readied for action, with the new lighter, more compact model expected to arrive here in 2012.

Tapping the look of the Ibuki concept car way back in 2003, when it starred for Mazda at the Tokyo Motor Show, the new droptop baby should be ready for action in 2012.

The next MX-5 is likely to be much lighter, more compact and quicker than the current model with help from Mazda's upcoming SKY engine family.

"The car got bigger and heavier over the last decade, but it’s now time to reverse the process and get back to basics, and build a coupe that handles like no other," says former MX-5 chief engineer, Takao Kijima.

The Ibuki was seen as a pointer to the MX-5 that hit the road in 2005, despite an unfinished exterior, with the RX-8's twin-backbone frame, a convertible body and super-short overhangs.

It missed the trip last time but now there is strong evidence from inside Mazda that the ideas behind the Ibuki will drive the next MX-5. A Mazda insider says the new roadster will pick-up the same philosophy used for the RX-8, with a “super-front midship four-cylinder layout.”

Translating from Japan-speak, that means a four-cylinder engine mounted behind the front axle line for an optimum front-rear weight balance. For Mazda, that also includes mounting the fuel tank and main silencer forward of the rear axle, meaning that all critical components are situated inside the car's wheelbase.

By using a revised version of the RX-8’s twin-backbone frame, Mazda is aiming to create a convertible with the chassis rigidity of a closed- top car. The Carsguide insider says all of this information comes from the Ibuki, a car whose specifications and body structure are increasingly appearing in patents in the USA and Japan.

As for the final shape of the new MX-5, Mazda's thinking is refected in the Shinari concept car that debuted at a Milan technology in August.

Word from Mazda headquarters in Hiroshima suggests that the Shinari contains strategic design elements of future Mazdas, especially those of the new MX-5.

When asked about the relevance of the Ibuki, one Mazda engineer could not deny the obvious links. "The Ibuki is not a one-off future concept car. It contains crucial aspects of the next generation roadster," he says.

He also went on to say that Mazda's research-and-development team is aiming for a sub-1000 kg kerb weight for the new MX-5, making the car far lighter than the current model. There are also likely to be shorter overhangs and a smaller-capacity engine from the all-new SKY engine series, most probably a 1.5-litre four.

New York 2011: Mazda's refreshed 2012 Mazda3 looks to the sky

Mazda is betting big on its SkyActiv engine technology, and the first North American vehicle to carry the new motor is the 2012 Mazda3. Makes sense, since one out of every three Mazda vehicles sold around the globe wears a "3" on the back. Launching with the 2012 Mazda3 this fall, SkyActiv engines and transmissions will then wind-up in the upcoming CX-5 by next spring, and a year later we'll get a diesel variant of the efficient engine.

mazda skyactiv-g engineFirst up, however, is the SkyActiv-G gasoline-burner, which is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. The directly injected unit is rated at 40 miles per gallon on the highway in the Mazda3, and produces 155 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 148 pound-feet of torque at 4,100 rpm. That's a horsepower increase of five percent and torque bump of 10 percent, all in a package that's 4.4 pounds lighter than the currently available standard 2.0-liter.

The SkyActiv-equipped 2012 Mazda3 is offered with a choice between two transmissions: a six-speed manual or automatic, both of which are also part of the SkyActiv family. SkyActiv-Drive is the automatic of the group, and helps the Mazda3 achieve a range of 540 miles. While the auto is the transmission of choice for 40 mpg drives, the SkyActiv-MT also allows for efficient motoring. When equipped with the manual, the fuel economy rating dips to 39 mpg on the highway.

SkyActiv-G engines will be offered under the hood of both the sedan and hatchback versions of the Mazda3. Both have also received a minor exterior refresh, which comes in the form of a revised front fascia. SkyActiv-equipped models can also be distinguished by some subtle blue headlamp trim and SkyActiv badging.

See the updates for yourself in the galleries below, and be sure to head past the jump to learn more about the 2012 Mazda3 and its SkyActiv technology.
